All these people could have been saved if Frontex and Italy had acted with urgency. Also in the Parliaments’ hearing, both denied the distress situation. How cynical: using advanced technologies for law enforcement, but not for saving lives. Surveillance leads to even more deaths

I find this harmonisation of rules for #SAR organisations very scary. Which guarantees do we have that they will facilitate rescuing and decriminalise humanitarians, instead of cementing the deadly rules of Italy and Greece? Saving lives is an obligation, not a crime.

It confirmed what I saw during my visit to Lampedusa: SAR coordination MUST improve.

- All unseaworthy vessels with migrants should be treated as a distress case by Frontex & MS -no exceptions
- All nearby vessels, incl. from NGOs, must be alerted and allowed to respond

I’m so disappointed by today’s @EP_Justice hearing on the Cutro shipwreck. Nearly 100 lives were lost, yet @Frontex & the Italian @guardiacostiera continue to point fingers and claim they followed the correct procedures. However, if people die, the procedures are not right. 1/3
