I’m so disappointed by today’s @EP_Justice hearing on the Cutro shipwreck. Nearly 100 lives were lost, yet @Frontex & the Italian @guardiacostiera continue to point fingers and claim they followed the correct procedures. However, if people die, the procedures are not right. 1/3

It confirmed what I saw during my visit to Lampedusa: SAR coordination MUST improve.
- All unseaworthy vessels with migrants should be treated as a distress case by Frontex & MS -no exceptions
- All nearby vessels, incl. from NGOs, must be alerted and allowed to respond

Today's hearing presented clear evidence of a complete lack of urgency to save lives at sea. Frontex & MS say every minute counts, yet their actions say otherwise. Their deliberate policies resulted in a waste of precious hours and, as such, a waste of precious lives. 3/3
