Interesting thread, worth reading re #NatConUK event, which has generated lots of media coverage, much of which seems to have been less than insightful and / or fueled by its own political prejudice rather than the reality of the event. Thanks to @KonstantinKisin for some balance

...I blamed Lords and other politicians for refusing to implement law changes and blocking the 2016 decision, using the narrative that it is 'too difficult' to leave EU.

I lost my cool after smug hectoring from Remainers, high on victory RE Government U-turn on EU Retained Law Bill. Specifically I responded to the row over whether to blame civil service/ blob...

I supported an amendment to ensure the government keeps on top of the urgent task of domesticating retained EU Law. No sloth or blob-blaming - get on with it, providing more transparency to the public about which laws are reformed/scrapped/stay same etc.

I asked the government if a U-turn on abolishing Leasehold is acceptable when it was promised at the despatch box. Does the excuse that the law is too hard to change give us conformation of the Tories' weakness as legislators?

One of those bonkers stories illustrating councils' over-reach; surely an abuse of these punitive powers eg Notices etc, effectively dictating how you behave in your own home. Yes, I know there are problem neighbours, sometimes noise can be hellish BUT sense of proportion please
RT @ISM_music: "Noise Abatement Notices can be devastating and it's simply wrong to use them to effectively ban musicians from practising at home at all."
The ISM were quoted today in @BB…

...Yes, it's toxic on here. Yes, lots of abuse is sexist. BUT there is a danger of an over-stated panic that treats women as inherently fragile, needing special protection. (All while ignoring real anti-women threats coming from trans activists, as it happens.) #OnlineSafetyBill

Another speech - highlighting the problems of what is described as 'online misogyny' being conflated with physical violence. There is a difference between speech (however horrible) and action...

My worry is that too many want the #OnlineSafetyBill to be more censorious, to pick and choose what are harms and avoid the bigger issue of an offline social/cultural problem.

How should Big Tech deal with the horrors of online encouragement of self harm/suicide sites? Good question- but why is there no mention of social contagion of gender dysphoria & those who promote tools of self harm (eg chest binders/double mastectomies)?

Later, I asked for a quick clarification from the government about how the public/individuals complain about problematic actions taken by Big Tech (which may well be brought about by this legislation). #OnlineSafetyBill

More bureaucrats? NB most speaking assume complaints will be about Big Tech NOT removing harmful content. My concern is, who do you complain to when your content is removed/censored? #OnlineSafetyBill

Back to the #OnlineSafetyBill and beginning with my concerns about a proposed ‘Super Complaints’ system run by Ofcom. There is the potential for certain organisations' complaints to be taken more seriously than individuals. Others want an Ombudsman - hmm.

I will be opposing this when it comes up today.
RT @SpeechUnion: A cross-party group of lords led by Baroness Morgan, the former culture secretary, is proposing a new legally-enforced code of practice that would require social media firms to prevent "online misogyny".

...M'luds never mean popular sovereignty - always parliamentary. Which, in the case of unelected Lords, is even more ironic.

Later on I got to have my say. Despite claims that amendments to the government’s EU Retained Law Bill are not about Brexit, and instead represent a mass outbreak of respect for sovereignty in the Lords, I begged to differ...

My first attempt at speaking on Retained EU Law Bill thwarted as I had raised a question previously, and that counted as speech. Those are the rules - except I have seen so many do the same and not been stopped. Like the EU, the Lords is a 'rules-based system'. Until it's not.
