My question on the Counter-Disinformation Unit (and thanks to
nitter.cz/BigBrotherWatch
for exposing it) that too often labelled political differences with the 'disinformation' label. Who fact-checks the fact-checkers? Who calls out - for example - BBC Verify when it refuses to correct the BBC's own factual errors?

In a brief discussion on new police powers for demonstrations and protests, I asked whether the problem is actually police reluctance at enforcing powers they already have (perhaps this is why some are so frustrated at the Gaza protests). Bans on face coverings and the like seems a distraction - AND a political underestimation of the deep culture of anti-Semitism, which has often gone unchallenged.
Perhaps we don't need more laws, but rather, we do need more courage in tackling open hatred of Jews in UK.

More on the Victims and Prisoners Bill - ensuring victims' rights are taken seriously should not mean anything goes. With some trepidation, I raised a few sceptical questions to those pouring scorn on the concept of Parental Alienation.
Parental Alienation might be a pseudo- medicalised term, but it does describe something real. I'm also not keen on putting into law the idea that victims can never themselves be guilty of (for example) alienating children from one parent using false narratives. To be fair, my points led to a constructive exchange with Baroness Chakrabarti.

Here is my amendment on women-only service provision. Speakers from all sides were keen to say that they were championing ALL victims, with lots of rhetoric about supporting policies on Violence Against Women and Girls.
BUT - guess what - there was silence or opposition as soon as they were faced with arguments for women-specific support. (1/4)

My two probing amendments to Victims & Prisoners Bill will be debated in Lords on Mon pm. 1st to make case for women-only service provision as choice. 2nd that we won't even know who victims/perpetrators are, unless data collected consistently on basis of sex registered at birth.

I ran out of time as usual, but tried to explain why I have problems with the
nitter.cz/search?q=%23Safetyof
- but have even more problems with its anti-democratic opponents. M'luds as always are far keener on citing international treaties and human-rights law than acknowledging why the public is tearing its hair out in frustration at parliamentary inaction. The unelected, of course, always (think they) know better.

Yesterday I gave my first tentative speech on the Victims and Prisoners Bill - in response to amendments proposing an ever-expanding definition of who would be considered 'victims' of crime to include third parties. I asked, is there a danger we might water down resources and support, while relativising specific suffering for *real* direct victims of crime?

Later on in discussion of the Victims and Prisoners Bill, I pointed out that not all child victims of sexual exploitation get official sympathy - as we know from the grooming-gang scandal. Conversely, suggesting under-18s committing offences (like knife crime) are likely to be victims themselves, seems a recipe for avoiding responsibility.
Oh, and please do not tell children that verbal harm is a crime - we don't want even more young people justifying censorship.

Today, in a debate in the Lords committee room, I raised some questions about the process of integrating those given refugee status. It's made harder when there are questions over the legitimacy of the refugee system itself. Plus, warm welcomes can feel like an ask for some when we are in such a dire economic mess, and questions or debate about resources are often silenced.
I ran out of time to develop my points on the key barriers to integration - identity politics and state multiculturalism. Look out for this week's

for more on those...

Later today, we had an interesting short debate on Religious Education. My question was - who would be an RE teacher in a period of identity politics and Cancel Culture?
The terrible treatment of the Batley Grammar School teacher is a case in point, let alone the row over Muslim prayer at Michaela School. Or indeed (and sadly ran out of time to make this point) when the various iterations of Conversion Therapy legislation threaten to criminalise RE teachers for any guidance given to pupils about clashes between traditional faith and sexuality or trans issues - to name a few.

Some signs say so much. If anything discredits honourable cause of Palestinian self-determination, it's such crass anti-capitalism used to celebrate blackmailing violence by Houthi pirates, while relativising & weaponising deliberate genocide of Jewish people in history, and today in aspiration by Hamas et al. Reminds me of that slogan on pro Gaza demo in New York before Xmas "Yemen, Yemen, make us proud. Turn another ship around". Yuk.

I only had three minutes to respond to a debate on parliamentary democracy and standards of public life. I focused on the neglected 'demos' part of the word democracy, and official hostility to people power.
The last thing we need are more codes of conduct - 'diversity', 'inclusion' and other branded ethical values that we supposedly all need to be officially trained in to improve standards. Yuk. Let what happened to Rachel Meade at the hands of her own professional standards body be a warning...

Yes, when politicians blame the blob it's lazy. But this story of Whitehall lawyers trying to scupper trans guidance shows how a power grab by politicised, activist layer of influential civil servants who think they know best, can distort democratic action

A catch-up from earlier this week's Inside The Lords. Infuriating when parliamentarians grandstand on Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG) but stay silent on wrong kind of females eg victims of grooming gangs or raped Jewish women. Two-tier outrage
