The Labour Government congratulates itself over landmark "reforms", judging itself on fairytale criteria and its own spin, not the independent reports of international bodies.

30 years ago Judge Giovanni Falcone was murdered in car bomb near Palermo.
As a courageous opponent of the Mafia, Falcone was entrusted with many cases involving organised crime.
He championed the rule of law and remained consistent throughout his life.

Today, 83 years ago, Giovanni Falcone was born in Palermo. He was assassinated by the Mafia in a bombing for his successful prosecution of hundreds of mafiosi in the Maxi Trial. His example reminds our democracies of the need to defend the rule of law against threats from within.
