Today, 83 years ago, Giovanni Falcone was born in Palermo. He was assassinated by the Mafia in a bombing for his successful prosecution of hundreds of mafiosi in the Maxi Trial. His example reminds our democracies of the need to defend the rule of law against threats from within.
