The climate crisis will spiral out of control if we allow global temperature rise to overshoot 2 degrees.
The EU will continue to focus on driving down emissions and ensuring that all parties deliver the policies that bring us to a 1.5-degree future.

The climate crisis has impacts beyond what vulnerable countries can shoulder alone. Very good that the #COP27 agenda now includes #LossAndDamage.
We need solutions that respond to the diverse needs on the ground and allow quick scaling up of support to those that need it most.

These rules do not work in isolation.
They require ambition on other policies too: saying goodbye to fossil fuels, moving to clean mobility, sustainable agriculture, healthy diets, and more.
This is about protecting our own health and that of the environment.

🧾Finally, we introduce the polluter pays principle. Right now, residues from pharmaceutical products and cosmetics cause 73% of pollution in urban wastewater. The costs for removing these are borne by water companies and thus by taxpayers. That needs to change.

🚽On urban wastewater, we start to monitor microplastics and pathogens like covid-19. We will stimulate the recovery of crucial minerals and nutrients from sludge and make wastewater treatment plants a source of renewable energy.

💧On water, we want to prevent biodiversity tipping points like in the Oder, when the combination of climate extremes and pollution provoked a massive death of fish.

🌬On air, we need to closely align our norms with new WHO standards. This will already take well over a decade to achieve.
We set stricter norms for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5). We will also the rules easier to enforce, with better access to justice for people affected.

Getting to climate neutrality is about much more than pushing down greenhouse gas emissions.
