Blue crab, an invasive species in Europe that turned into a tasty opportunity for the local fishers.
But how much do you know about it?
Here are three facts about blue crab we bet you didn't know!
RT @euronewsgreen: 🌊 Swedish climate scientist @jrockstrom is one of the voices you’ll be listening to on our new podcast #OceanCalls.
We asked him perhaps the biggest question about the ocean of all time. Find out more on June 30.

Finally, Low Impact Fishers of Europe’s Executive Secretary, @BrianLIFE_EU talks is through the fascinating concept of #biocultural diversity. (4/4)
Second, Els Torreele of the @ILVOvlaanderen and researcher in fisheries biology explains to us the importance of knowledge sharing between #fishers and #scientists. (3/4)
First of, @Louis_Lbts of @WWFEU breaks down the weighted of socio-economic factors in designing a balanced ecosystem approach to fisheries management. (2/4)
Today was the 2022 #EUFishScience Seminar - and we got the chance to hear from a panel of NGO, small-scale fishing sector and scientist about their point of view on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management.
They were kind enough to share their thoughts with us:

The #EMFAF Programme for the Czech Republic 🇪🇺🇨🇿 has been adopted for the period of 2021-2027.
€42.8M will support Czech sustainable #aquaculture & processing activities, the conservation of aquatic resources & food security through the supply of #fishery products. @ZEK_Praha
This 2022 #EUFishScience seminar was the occasion to pick the brightest mind around - and we got to talk to @DickeyCollas about how the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management is changing the way @ICES_ASC approaches research:
A historic moment for #OurOcean🌊!
Today, ahead of #UNOC2022, the 🇪🇺 adopts its revised Agenda for International Ocean Governance
It sets the course for the EU global action for the protection & sustainable use of our #BluePlanet🌍
RT @VSinkevicius: The Nature Restoration Law will heal 🇪🇺marine life, but we need 🌍 efforts to make all oceans healthy!
Our new International Ocean Agenda is out!

Ocean policy officer @WWFEU , @Louis_Lbts reminds us that if all should strive to minimize their impact through innovation, we mustn’t forget the socio-economic struggle this brings for fishers. A big part of EU policy is and shall remain “leave no one behind”.
@BrianLIFE_EU: "Use the right gear in the right place at the right time."
Fishing is a polyvalent activity, which should rely on a co-management process between fishers and scientists to determine the sensitive areas and habitats to determine where we can fish.
Researcher at @ILVOvlaanderen , Els Toreele sets that as a scientist need to be careful to not fall into the trap of strict science. Having the knowledge on board of fishers, both of their data & experience, is key to informing scientific advice.

Research Scientist Dr. Robert L. Stephenson underlines for us that one of the main challenges of the #EAFM is finding the right trade-off between ecological, economic, social/cultural, and institutional values and objectives.
@ICES_ASC chair, Dr. @DickeyCollas walks us through the pillars of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (#EAFM):
1. Ability to achieve - A system that delivers.
2. Ecological well-being
3. Human well-being
DG @vitcheva_eu highlights the priorities an effective implementation of an EAFM could address:
- asses the impact of fishing on sensitive habitats & species
- account for trends in the ecosystems when managing fisheries
- promote the engagement of stakeholders
