For decades we have outsourced our plastic waste problems, often to countries already drowning in garbage.

We Europeans have a duty to take up our responsibility, and in fact we are perfectly capable to clean up our own plastic waste.
The @EU_Commission took a first good step with its proposal, but we strengthened it by inserting an export ban for plastic waste from the EU. (2/4)

This export ban will be a game-changer for industry, as it will incentivize investments in new recycling capacity. Together with ambitious targets for plastic recycling, reuse & prevention, as well as recycled content targets, I am confident we can clean up our own mess. (3/4)

We also beefed up the monitoring system for other waste streams.
We ensured all waste exported outside the EU will have to be treated according to EU standards.
A new independent auditing system will have to make sure that environmental protection is preserved & polluters pay
