Lagarde: We are determined to ensure the timely return of inflation to our 2% target. The current elevated level of uncertainty reinforces the importance of keeping a data-dependent approach in our monetary policy decision-making.
Lagarde: Inflation has come down from its peak in October, owing to a sharp drop in energy prices, and stood at 8.5% in February. Inflation excluding energy and food has continued to increase, reaching 5.6% in February.
Lagarde: The euro area banking sector is resilient, with strong capital and liquidity positions.
The ECB’s policy toolkit is fully equipped to provide liquidity support to the euro area financial system if needed and to preserve the smooth transmission of monetary policy.
Lagarde: I welcome the swift action taken by the Swiss authorities, which were instrumental for restoring orderly market conditions.
We’re monitoring market developments closely and stand ready to respond as necessary to preserve euro area price and financial stability.
