@PatsyBrady19 Yes indeed. I meet the best of people on trains across Europe! We were badly delayed if I remember rightly.

Remember this when someone says "the nurses are asking for an 'above inflation' rise".
Public sector pay freezes mean pay cuts year after year. You can't retain staff by cutting pay.

@ardentcritic I think the spike in 2020-21 was when Chinese students couldn't go to America because of Covid, so we had an unexpected increase. Other markets are being tapped now. University education is a huge export industry. Not much of it was sold to Europe but some was.

@ardentcritic Can you give me numbers for 2021-22?
And it's no good singing about the fact that they pay international fees now, when in fact they don't come.
Our loss.
We gained immeasurably from the European students in our classes, in fields that rest-of-the-world students don't come for.

Who'd use HS2 if it runs from nowhere to nowhere? Or from Birmingham (which has a train to Euston) to not-even-Euston? The thing is, trains are better than air travel because they take you to the heart of your destination.
They do that without needing to be any faster, actually.

RT @JohnDalton6011: Permitting the use of bee-toxic pesticides is an example of performative Brexit - changing from and EU rule just because we can. The consequences will be dire.

Well well, what a surprise. I wonder why anyone thought Brexit was a good idea. "I know, let's have no Horizon research funding, no EU student fees, no funded study abroad for our students. That'll be great!" 🙄

Yeah and they're topping up the energy bills for the billionaires in huge mansions and the foreign magnates with huge unoccupied homes in London. And they're refusing to pay the nurses and teachers, so the workers have to turn to charity for their basic needs. Don't be deceived.

Encouraging to hear that , a young Iranian woman unjustly imprisoned by the regime has been released on bail. But we mustn't let up - the false charges against her & all political prisoners in Iran must be dropped immediately

RT @RichardJMurphy: Whatever the government and right wing press would like you to believe we are not near record levels of UK debt and when it was much higher we built the NHS, masses of social housing and education for all. In other words, national debt funded real improvement in our lives

But thank you to @Transcendental1 and the Greens on the council for suggesting an appropriate response. Universities are crucial to the future of a serious country and need to be properly funded to do the job they're required to do. Shame on the Tories.

So the leader of the county council thinks that the university is a business. Well if it were a business it could charge students what it actually costs to educate them (not have its fees capped while costs rise) or cut the provision to match the price.
