An Italian #Frontex helicopter was helping Albanian authorities with border surveillance 20 km off the coast when the crew noticed something unusual: a sailing boat and three smaller fiberglass boats were quickly exchanging some boxes between each other in the open sea...
The helicopter crew alerted 🇮🇹 and 🇦🇱 authorities and the sailing boat was brought to shore. What was on board? Apart from two suspected smugglers, one tonne of marihuana and a lot of cash.
The two other boats were intercepted in the Albanian territorial waters
@effiemou39 Search and rescue is a legal obligation and a priority for everyone operating at sea. It is also part of all our operational plans. Rescuing lives and fighting cross-border crime do not contradict each other.
It has been an intense week for all officers in #Frontex operations.

In the past 8 days, more Ukrainian citizens have been leaving than entering the 🇪🇺
We expect the number of people crossing 🇪🇺-🇺🇦 borders to remain high due to the summer season and the import & export of goods continuing through land borders
🚨We’re in the middle of summer, but the #StandingCorps officers are on duty.
In the past week, we helped authorities in the 🇪🇺 and beyond detect 1 tonne of marijuana, 5 suspected smugglers, 9 falsified documents, 6 stolen🚘and a potential case of trafficking in children
Responding to the high migratory pressure, #Frontex has more than 2 200 standing corps officers and staff at various sections of the 🇪🇺 external border, as well as in Albania, Serbia, Montenegro and Moldova
The Western Balkan continued to be the most active migratory route into the EU with 14 866 detections in July, nearly three times more than last year.
The number of arrivals is also high in the Central Mediterranean with 14 800 irregular border crossings registered in July
Latest from the 🇪🇺 external borders:
In the first seven months of this year, there were about 155 090 irregular entries to the European Union 🇪🇺, 86% more than in the same period of last year.

49 migrants tried to reach Europe in inflatable kayaks, very dangerous in quickly changing sea conditions of the Central Mediterranean. Luckily, Frontex spotted them from the air and a Lithuanian #Frontex boat was sent to the rescue
Search and rescue is part of every #Frontex sea operation. Last week, #Frontex boats and airplanes helped EU Member States save 631 persons who needed help at sea
