Today is a good day. After many years of hard work, today the @EU_Commission proposes an anti-SLAPP Directive: an EU law that will protect #journalists from abusive lawsuits #SLAPP intended to silence critics and vital public interest investigations.

This is the EU’s response to a serious threat to journalists that was brought to the fore in #Malta after the assassination of #DaphneCaruanaGalizia & remains a serious problem across Europe.
Our work doesn’t stop here.

Its ethos is rooted in European fundamental rights: it strives for the promotion of rule of law, prioritising justice & the end of impunity.

Our work is ramping up on the Social Climate Fund. Very happy with the close collaboration in a fruitful meeting with our shadow rapporteurs.

Dr Laura Codruţa Kövesi, the first European Chief Prosecutor, visited Malta and was not impressed.

In 2017, #Malta opted not to join the @EUProsecutor. @OwenBonnici changed his mind just 5 months later. Since then, just 2 fraud reports were filed.
Cosmetic changes and fanfare will not rebuild Malta’s reputation. On good governance & corruption, this government is in a deficit.

Commissioner for Standards in Public Life George Hyzler was grilled before Members of CONT this morning pursuant to his nomination on the @EUAuditors.
He was approved with an overwhelming 25 in favour, 2 against, 1 abstention.
Congratulations to Dr Hyzler for making Malta proud.

Slovakia's law enforement authorities have charged former PM @RobertFico.
More prominent figures listed in #PanamaPapers, which were uncovered by investigative journalists, are being prosecuted.
Fico's former company had links with Mossack Fonseca.

Pope Francis' visit to #Malta has moved @presidentmt to reflect on the needless loss of life in Ukraine. There is not much he can do there. So I remind him about the needless loss of life in the war against corruption. That war is not over yet.
