New 🇪🇺 binding rules to increase gender balance on corporate boards!

This morning @europarl_en will adopt the landmark “Women on Boards” Directive - so that at least 40% of non-executive director posts are occupied by women.

An historic day unblocking the potential of women 🗣️

The @EU_Commission first presented its proposal in 2012 and the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position back in 2013.

The file was blocked in the Council for almost a decade until Council finally agreed on a position in March 2022.

Today, only 30.6% of board members in the EU’s largest publicly listed companies are women, with significant differences across 🇪🇺

Even with increases in representation on boards, in 2022 fewer than 1 in 10 of the largest listed companies in EU countries have a woman chair/CEO.

This is a good day for EU & Irish businesses!

To fully unlock our economic potential we must have a critical mass of women at the decision making table!

Many organisations in 🇮🇪 have led the way on this front including @ibec_irl @BalanceInBizIE @IDAIRELAND @NWCI @AongusatDell

I also want to thank former Commissioner @VivianeRedingEU and my great colleague @mgracacarvalho for all of their work in making the "Women on Boards" Directive a reality for women across Europe.

Thank you. 👏
