Would it not have made more sense for Europe to have weaned itself off this gas from the first day voluntarily and at our own pace?

These reports are very worrying in. The Eurogroup ministers abandoned the "roadmap" towards a deposit insurnace. The Banking Union is unravelling. And, as we learned in the last Euro crisis, without a Banking Union, the "doom loop" between banks and sovereigns, will return.
