RT @SMerler: : energy savings in 🇩🇪 versus 🇮🇹. In Germany, gas consumption has decreased by 15% on average during the first 6 months of the year compared to 2021. If it keeps saving energy at this rate, Germany will have enough gas to withstand a scenario with 0 Russian flows. 1/

In "The Heroes of Retreat" Enzensberger argued that Gorbachev, Jaruzelski, Suarez, who accepted peacefully the end of the tyranny that empowered them, were more praiseworthy than traditional warrior heroes.

Every human owes a debt to Gorbachev, the original hero of retreat.

RT @paulg: One advantage of having multiple sovereign states is that you can run experiments to test your unbelievably stupid policy ideas without everyone having to adopt them.

RT @igorsushko: @Google Translate is flipping the meaning of the text in some languages. "To go dark" is not a complicated concept to translate you'd think.
For clarity: Do not share any information with regards to the ongoing Battle for Kherson.

Europe continues to be complicit here: Russian oil continues to be exported mostly in Greek tankers.
RT @RobinBrooksIIF: Russia is exporting more crude than ever. Oil tankers are flagged all over the place to conceal ownership. We built a web crawler that goes from shell company to shell company to find the owner. Russia exports so much oil thanks to Greek-owned oil tankers. With @JonathanPingle

Great thread on a facinating new paper by @joachim_voth @ReddingEcon Stephan Heblich supporting the (Eric Williamson) old hypothesis that the accumulation of wealth from the slave trade played a key role in Britain's wealth accumulation and the industrial revolution.
RT @joachim_voth: most seeing increases in welfare by 40% or more. Prior to Britain's involvement in the slave trade, places with lots of slave wealth in 1833 were no …

Yet here is where we must be most worried (and uncertainty is greatest).

With energy prices skyrocketing, the politics of the Winter are atrocious.

Many in Europe are itching to throw Ukraine under the bus and accommodate Putin again.

Only one thing can stop the inevitable: Western support for Ukraine. With Western support, the Ukrainians can keep fighting.

Cruelly, it is Western ‘support’ that has kept Russia so well-funded.

The @economist attributes this strength to
- Previous rounds of sanctions had left the Russian economy quite insulated.
- Stewardship is in the hands of competent technocrats.
- Most shamefully - the EU paid €86bn for fossil fules since the war started.

It is not just the strong Ruble, at levels last seen in 2018. Some data from the @economist:
- Industrial production down only 1.8% YoY.
- Inflation, at 10%, better than in much of Europe
- Activity recovering (below)
- Consumer spending stable YoY
- Unemployment stable

Any one has an alternative explanation for this insane giveaway?
