Europe breathes a sigh of relief—@TheDemocrats defying expectations, no sign of a Trumpist wave
Congratulations to all candidates & organizers who worked so hard to defend democracy!
These kids & teachers are never listened to by their government. And they were just grateful that EU officials sat down to talk to them.
“It was the first time in my life I felt I had a homeland”— a student participant said.
One of the most gratifying moments of my MEP carreer.
While there is immense sadness in these stories, the courage & perseverance of these people was so incredibly uplifting.
They face attacks and intimidation at every turn, for standing up for something as basic as a right to a quality education. But they keep fighting.
It needs to be absolutely clear for EU institutions: this is a rule of law issue & a democracy issue. Access to education, labor rights, the freedom of speech & assembly are all undermined.
Teachers and students in Hungary are EU citizens too— and they need Europe’s support.
A gay student described how harrassment intensified after the government’s shameful homophobic law.
And nowhere is the crisis more dire than in disadvantaged roma communities, segregated from their white peers, neglected for decades.
Officials in the European institutions were in disbelief, upon learning that teachers barely earn about 400 euros per month. They asked if the interpreter missed a zero.
Teachers & high-schoolers get threatened by school districts if they dare to organize strikes, go to protests or speak up.
Orban’s mighty propaganda machine is going after teenagers in ad-hominem attacks. They smear protesters as being paid by Soros or the US.
Participants shared their personal testimonies. They described an environment of oppression & intimidation.
We are at a point where teachers are getting fired for engaging in civil disobedience, the only form of protest left after the government outlawed strikes.
A nationwide movement is sweeping across Hungary, protesting the crisis of public education.
We invited teachers & students to Brussels— giving them a platform to address EU decision-makers.
Colleagues from the EU’s side literally teared up as they listened to their stories.🧵
RT @b_novak: That didn’t age well
At the EU, we are currently working on a new Human Rights Due Diligence directive for responsible business conduct— it’s unbelievable that Twitter is going backwards…

RT @ShannonRSingh: Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company.
I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to pro…
This self-proclaimed “freedom fighter” is always ready to throw nasty insults at Brussels & NATO allies— never a shred of criticism towards Russia
“They” crushed our revolution?
Why is it so hard to say *the Soviets*?
Orban & Bolsonaro last met in February, will Orban-curse specialists allow it? 🙃
RT @illesgergo_eu: There's a popular urban legend in Hungary called "Orbán's curse": if Viktor Orbán publicly meets a foreign leader, he/she is going to fall, or political unrest will follow in weeks.
And why this is relevant? Well, this is Orbán campaigning for Babis in Ústí nad Labem, 29.09.2021
The Orban-curse strikes again. Congratulations, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva!
Great news for the Amazon, our planet— and the global fight for democracy against far-right authoritarian populists.

RT @katka_cseh: 🚨 Bombshell 🚨uncovered by my friend & @momentumhu MP @MartonTompos & colleagues—
China 🇨🇳 runs two police stations in the middle of Budapest, calling them “overseas help centres.”
In an EU & NATO member, it raises security & human rigths concerns & needs scrutiny.
A thread.
Update on the issue of secret Chinese police stations in the middle of Budapest👇
Quingtian province police logos magically disappeared
RT @MartonTompos: Before/after we visited the site Fuzhou Police Overseas Service Station in Budapest. Billboards with logos removed, no trace left. Yet the Hungarian government claims to know nothing of the issue.
RT @samiraraf: This is how we do it. Amend a report with so many progressive, inclusive and #feminist amendments that the ID rapporteur is taking her name off her own report because she thinks it’s full of sick ideologies. Yes she really said that. Well - happy to vote in favor of this report!
RT @b_novak: Hungarian public media landing page.
No mention of the massive demo in the capital.
There is, however, a link to the speech Orban delivered 230km outside the capital, the one where he talks about Brussels shooting at Hungary.
Staggering crowds at yesterday's protests in Budapest, as students, teachers & allies rally against the crisis of public education in Orbán’s Hungary
👉 Some background to better understand what brought the situation to a boiling point for teachers & their incredible students 🧵
