What a sight! #Budapest

‼️ Tens of thousands on the streets in Budapest, standing up against the crisis of public education & standing up for our future.
🚨Happening now! 🚨Another week, another student-led mass demonstration in Hungary— for their teachers, against the Orban government defunding public education.

Students, workers, intellectuals rise up against oppression, for self-determination. They plead for Western help, but Russian tanks brutally crush them.
Viktor Orban may change his position like the wind changes. But lessons of our history do not change.
It all started with some lies on a bus.
❌ This is sickening
While real-life Russian shells are killing innocent civilians in #Kyiv & the rest of Ukraine, the Orban-government is mailing anti-EU propaganda to every single household. In their twisted world, the aggressor is… Brussels.
Care to comment, @EU_Commission?

👉 Some background to better understand what brought the situation to a boiling point for teachers & their incredible students 🧵
Happening now‼️Mass protests in Budapest continue. People have had enough of the Orban government defunding public education & sacking teachers who dare to raise their voice.

RT @lccanor: True leadership is to acknowledge the pain in your society and to su out loud “hate has no space in our country.” Bravo @ZuzanaCaputova!
still in shock on how these attacks keep happening. Policies of progress do not make societal hate disappear! It’s our job to fight the hate.

While Marton & other colleagues continue to investigate in HU, I will pursue the issue from Brussels. We'll get to the bottom of it & the government will have to answer some tough questions. And if China is breaking international law by doing this, we must force them to stop

Unfortunately, Hungary's close ties to China leave doubts whether Hungary is capable of, or willing to provide this protection. Especially if ministries are oblivious to Chinese police working on their turf or, even worse, decide to look the other way.
4/
But HU is a member of the EU and NATO. EU and NATO member states must be able to guarantee the safety of third nationals living there, especially if they (as it is often the case) are prosecuted by their oppressive, autocratic regimes back home. This is a human rights issue.

The Orban-government's pro-China attitudes are well-documented. Hungary vetoed a number of EU resolutions that condemned China, while many key Chinese companies (Huawei, Bank of China) use Hungary as their regional centre.
2/
There are widespread allegations and a number of confirmed cases about how Chinese state organisations' outposts use coercion, blackmail, and other methods of force against their own citizens abroad, blatantly ignoring the laws of the country where they operate.

@MartonTompos asked Hungary's Ministry of Interior, but, rather shockingly, the state organ responsible for overseeing police forces knows nothing about Chinese police stations in the middle of the Hungarian capital. This fact alone should raise eyebrows.
🚨 Bombshell 🚨uncovered by my friend & @momentumhu MP @MartonTompos & colleagues—
China 🇨🇳 runs two police stations in the middle of Budapest, calling them “overseas help centres.”
In an EU & NATO member, it raises security & human rigths concerns & needs scrutiny.
A thread.
RT @RenewEurope: The brave people of #Ukraine 🇺🇦 represented by its president, elected leaders & civil society, our joint candidate for #SakharovPrize, together with @EPPGroup & @TheProgressives, is amongst the three finalists today voted by the @EP_ForeignAff & @EP_Development committees.
Horrific. Our thoughts are with the victims’ loved ones, and the Slovak LGBTI community in this difficult time.
RT @MSimecka: I’m deeply saddened by the tragic event in the 🏳️🌈 bar in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Two men were brutally murdered. Motive unknown, but police not ruling out hate towards the #LGBTI community.
My sincerest condolences go out to their families and friends.
