RT @EurLiberalForum: "If the EU is not putting more money into financing investigative journalism, then media freedom will deteriorate in the EU. We need this scrutiny to keep our liberal democracies functioning".
- @katka_cseh MEP, @RenewEurope
RT @judithbuntingld: Prep underway at @kbrbe for the @EurLiberalForum #IdeaAccelerator on Media Freedom starting this afternoon.
See you soon @marcusryder @katka_cseh @RenewEurope @Telexhu @PaddyForum
Glad to see the Pegasus inquiry committee starting its crucial work at @europarl_en
RT @donath_anna: We now know what we could only have guessed: several EU governments have built surveillance states with the #Pegasus cyberweapon. /1
RT @RenewEurope: Pegasus Inquiry starts its work!
In light of fresh reports of the abuse of surveillance, the importance of the Pegasus Inquiry Committee, initiated by us, is greater than ever
Congratulations to @moritzkoerner, who was elected to 3rd Vice-Chair!
📰with @SophieintVeld & him👇
Relaxing, joyful & #HappyEaster to you all! 🐇
… lies about the Ukraine war spread by Orban’s propagandists have entered genocide-denial territory.
RT @b_novak: Tamás Lánczi, a pro-Orban pundit, says Russian forces have tried to minimize the harm to Ukraine’s civilian population.
RT @EricHolthaus: Your periodic reminder that this was the headline a week ago today but you may not have read it because an actor slapped another actor at an awards show
RT @SophieintVeld: These are very serious revelations. We need to get to the bottom of this. The parliamentary inquiry committee into the use of spyware in the EU will immediately investigate these new revelations. @jeroen_lenaers
A crucial, consequential first-round victory— also for Europe 🇪🇺
Congratulations to our @RenewEurope friends & allies in France👏 and best of luck for the second round!
RT @DaveKeating: BREAKING: #Macron beats #LePen in French #presidentielles2022 first round election.
A larger spread than 2017.
A deeply worrying thought after last Sunday’s election in Hungary— who will be the next target? Attacks against journalists, human rights defenders, opposition-led local governments, LGBT+ people & other minorities will escalate.
The EU needs to step up & protect EU citizens.
RT @RenewEurope: We call for all EU countries to identify & expel Russian & Belarusian covert operatives active on EU soil!
The @EU_Commission must conduct a thorough assessment of the use of visa-free travel to the EU to identify loopholes.
No more free passes to Putin’s proxies!
Every oppressive regime falls one day. We continue to resist & will always have faith in our country. We need Europe not to give up on us either.
NGOs, journalists, academics, LGBT+ people & all of Orban’s targets are EU citizens too— and they deserve Europe’s support.
[ends]
As the cost of living crisis worsens & Orban becomes evermore isolated as the only remaining Putin-supporter in the EU, we need to brace for years of deep crisis
That’s also the reason we need to keep fighting. For Hungarians, and for our enduring vision of a better country

The shadow of the war was an important factor. Many unattached voters believed the lies spread through Orban’s vast propaganda machine— that @markizaypeter is a warmonger & would drag Hungary into the war in Ukraine. Their fear was debilitating and we couldn’t push back.

I feel proud that our six-party alliance managed to set differences aside & unite— but we need to work harder to gain voters’ trust, to make them believe we represent a credible alternative that is ready to govern our country, and has solutions to their everyday worries.

Our prospects are truly bleak. Not only did Orban win a supermajority, neo-fascist Our Homeland entered Parliament. That means 70%+ for radical right, xenophobic & homophobic politics
I am deeply worried for minorities, and dangerous hate-mongering tearing our society apart

We fought an uphill battle. As @OSCE unveiled, the race was unfair— with @markizaypeter’s 5 minutes of state TV airtime in 4 years; with Orban’s refusal to debate; with our 1,500 billboard spaces against his 12,000; with reports of irregularities

Our opposition alliance suffered a crushing defeat. First and foremost, our task is self-reflection: confront the facts and understand the reasons.
Despite all our efforts and hard work, our messages did not resonate with voters beyond our urban, liberal base.

I’m grateful for all the encouraging messages from friends & allies in Europe and beyond.
A (self-)reflection thread on our devastating election results.👇

RT @RenewEurope: Finally, @EU_Commission will trigger the Rule of Law conditionality mechanism against the Hungarian Government.
It's long overdue! The Commission shouldn't have waited this long to apply the mechanism that we fought to secure.
