This morning at 10h45, I will present my report on the Frontex Status Agreement between the EU and Mauritania, which the Commission is currently negotiating. This would allow for Frontex deployment on the territory of a non-European country for the first time ever. 🧵

Re I am very concerned about the implications of these plans. Besides, I am not convinced that the current agreement has sufficient safeguards to ensure accountability in case of human rights violations. Frontex staff is foreseen to get complete immunity from prosecution. 2/ t.co/7zheP9bfpZ

Re In February, I travelled to Mauritania to examine the situation. The country has no asylum procedure and is not bound by European human rights standards. Yet, Frontex is foreseen to operate under Mauritanian command. How will Frontex be able to respect EU law in this context? 3/

Re Moreover, Frontex has many fundamental rights issues to solve. Expanding their mandate now would send the wrong signal. 4/

In one day, two groups have apparently been pushed back from Kos, not allowing them to ask for asylum, treating them as animals. What lessons did Greece learn from the disaster? When will Council and Commission speak out against these violations?

Impressive conversation with Nasra, who fled Yemen and lives on the streets of Tunis with her children since President Saied's racist speech. She's desperate and sees no way out.

The 🇱🇻 Parliament has effectively legalised pushbacks - against the objections of the @CommissionerHR, @Refugees and @Tiesibsargs_LV. The amendments to the State Border Guard Law stipulate the right of border guards to prevent irregular entry with no exception for asylum-seekers. t.co/l4F9X5NOTL

Just concluded my working visit to Tunisia. I observed a very poor humanitarian situation for refugees and migrants. Many of them live on the streets and rely on the goodwill of Tunisians for basic needs, making them extremely vulnerable for exploitation. 1/5 t.co/aSfRMaLdnO

Re The refugees and migrants I talked to in both Tunis and Sfax described a very dire situation. They face racism and hostilities, fueled by Saied's speech. Ever since, more people desperately flee the country. They embark on alarmingly unsafe ships, leading to more deaths. 2/5 t.co/chVgXJHFk3

Re Empowering the current repressive government also is a slap in the face of people fighting for democracy and fundamental rights, and may lead to more people escaping.
Moreover, the deal serves as an EU stamp of approval of the President’s authoritarian drift. 3/5
