Leggeri's email to his staff exposes the reasons why he damaged Frontex: resisting and even ridiculing its task to prevent and combat human rights violations at the borders. Guarding the borders and human rights compliance should be intrinsically linked in the EU.

Ontslag Frontex directeur Leggeri is eerste stap om mensenrechten hoog op de agenda te krijgen in het Agentschap. Nu grondige wijziging structuur en cultuur Frontex. Maar ook lidstaten en Commissie moeten hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen om pushbacks effectief uit te bannen.

Leggeri resigns because 'Frontex mandate has silently but effectively changed'. Meaning: I never understood that Frontex must protect fundamental rights in all its actions. Next director must make this a top priority. But also the Commission needs to stop impunity at the borders.

We are waiting for confirmation, but Legerri's resignation (and his immediate right hand) is the only chance for Frontex to start prioritising fundamental rights and prevent violations instead of covering them up.
