I remember the summer of 2021 - really a time an epoch away from now.

The excitement from having Zelensky, 'a brand new face' in charge of the nation and a hope of major changes, was long gone.

Zelensky was almost completely absorbed by 'the system'. Lots of shady characters standing behind his back, pulling strings, and whispering things in his ears.

The defense minister is an old grumpy post-Soviet military bureaucrat with an awkwardly incompetent spokesperson and repeatedly failing defense procurement plans.

The defense production reform, along with many other vital reforms, standing still.

Instead, the inception of new bureaucratic monsters filled with shady characters that were mostly engaged in the same bureaucratic ping pong with little to no results seen on the ground.

It's the same old Ukrainian model of 'making two steps forward and then immediately a step back.'

Defense Minister Andriy Taran and top general Ruslan Khomchak hated each other so much that they couldn't stay in the same room and literally waged a legal battle against each other.

Disappointment was growing.

And then, during one of Zelensky's never-ending team reshuffles, suddenly a new name pops up: General Valeriy Zaluzhny.

I remember the 'Woooooooow' cry that rolled through the military and near-military community when Zaluzhny was appointed as the new commander-in-chief.

Not many really knew him beyond the community back then.

A career soldier who went through years of dark decay in the Ukrainian armed forces as a platoon commander then received an extensive military education and gained his stars and his experience in the battlefields of Donbas.

RT by @StevensHelga: Reality always speaks louder than any words. An entire family was killed in a fire last night as a result of a Russian strike on Kharkiv using "Shahed" drones. Parents and their three children were killed. Oleksiy, the older son, was seven; Mykhailo, the middle son, was six; and Pavlo, the younger son, was only seven months old.

These children had not yet seen life, but were killed as a result of Russian madness. Another family was killed: a man and his wife. My condolences to the victims' loved ones.

The rescue operation in Kharkiv is ongoing. Four people were rescued, including a child. Dozens of people were evacuated. All services are working, and everyone affected will receive the necessary aid.

I thank everyone who helps Ukraine and Ukrainians defend against Russian terror. Every act of support is critical. It is also critical to realize that this terror cannot go unpunished or remain without a fair response.

Terrorists must lose the war they started. Russia must be held accountable for every life it has harmed and ruined. This is the only way to make security a reality again.

A drone operator of the aerial reconnaissance of the 68th Separate Huntsman Brigade discovered him and dropped a note to Serhiy that instructed him to follow the drone.

Serhiy crawled 700 meters to safety where he was then rescued by his fellow soldiers. He’s now recovering in a hospital.

It was a game of good cop and bad cop, writes the NYT. Some leaders jokingly told Orban they would send him bills for the nights they spent with him in Brussels trying to persuade him to support funding for Ukraine. Others were not joking and said that they would begin the procedure for excluding Hungary from EU procedures. Still others offered him a friendly late-night drink so he could complain about how the evil European bureaucracy had united against him for ideological reasons.

“Bad Cop” was played by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. On Monday, he summoned Orban and bluntly stated that he would not see the right to veto the aid package for Ukraine in a year. Michel put his “nuclear option” on the table: he told Orban that he would face a procedure for depriving him of his vote in the EU - an unprecedented step for the EU.

On Wednesday evening, Orban met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, his comrade in far-right ideology. It was a meeting over a bottle of champagne on green velvet armchairs in the premier room of the exemplary five-star Amigo Hotel in the heart of Brussels. Meloni gently convinced Orbán that it would be much more profitable for him to join the EU’s common line, it would be better for everyone.

The next move was Emmanuel Macron. The French President suggested that Orbán make some changes to the EU joint statement, which would take into account some of Orbán's complaints about the EU. (The EU is blocking €20 billion from Hungary due to problems with corruption and democracy caused by Orban's 17 years in power.
