It’s now a year since I became Deputy Mayor for Transport & I’m starting 2023 by looking back at what we achieved in 2022, starting with the introduction of all-electric buses on route 63, built in Scarborough.

In March, we celebrated Harrow-on-the-Hill station becoming step free following tireless campaigning from @TransportForAll and @harrow_council

Spring saw the welcome return of Night Tube services as London continued to open up after the pandemic

We re-opened the Bank branch of the northern line with modern, spacious new platforms and tunnels.

And then of course, the one we’d all been waiting for, the Elizabeth line finally opened

Over the summer we also published data showing that the number of people killed on London’s roads has fallen to lowest level on record thanks to our world-leading policies.

In (a very hot 🥵) July, we opened the London Overground extension to Barking Riverside

In August, we finally agreed a long-term funding deal with the Government, removing the threat of the managed decline of transport in London, and enabling us to re-start projects, like electrifying Santander Cycles.

And in the autumn, Bond Street station opened, and the Elizbeth line started running not just through central London, but out into Essex and Berkshire too.

In September I reiterated London’s support for Ukraine to the Mayor of Kyiv at a summit in Prague. In addition to free travel on arrival for those fleeing the conflict, London provided logistical and material support such as emergency service vehicles.

I also want to pay tribute to the amazing transport workers who kept London moving through heat waves, snow and floods. A sobering reminder of why we need more and better public transport in London and around the world as we face up to the realities of the climate emergency.
