Great example of rethinking the built environment. Demolition has to be the last resort. 'Building on top' often possible as the original building often 'over engineered' ie it's foundations capable of taking a lot more weight on top & a wooden extension is light @CEIBois
RT @SustainableTall: This is a really interesting vertical extension

@CoopPartyLocal @SBarryStanners @LabLinda75 Better insulation is needed in most homes, even new builds, but it's important to consider what it is made from. The vast majority of insulations are made using fossil fuels which negates a portion of their climate benefit. Look instead for nature- based eg wood fibre, hemp etc

While insulating buildings to drive down operational carbon emissions is essential, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that the materials we use & the construction process generates 11% of all carbon emissions. We need to shift from concrete & steel to nature-based materials.

@CSkidmoreUK Lots of very good proposals in this report on achieving net zero in the UK but can't see anything on reducing emissions from how we build ie the materials we use. Focus is only on operations. @James_BG @TimberDevUK

Scotland take the lead. Can England equalise?
@michaelgove
RT @ScotEcoDesign: Jon Bootland, CEO of @PassivhausTrust, welcomed @patrickharvie’s confirmation Scotland will be adopting Passivhaus standards for all future housebuilding. “@ScotParl is to be applauded for taking this crucial step towards meeting their net-zero goals”

Good news happening in Scotland. This will save residents significant sums on their fuel bills & reduce carbon emissions (as fossil fuels still produce much of our energy) for the benefit of us all.

Did you know concrete is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions - more than any single country in the world other than China & the USA. bbc.co.uk/news/science-environ
RT @thisisconcrete: 🔥Did you know is naturally non-combustible? This means it doesn't contribute to fires when they occur, giving peace of mind to building occupiers and owners.

One of my old schools Norham High in North Shields was one of only 3 schools in England that taught O-Level Norwegian as the big shops in Newcastle needed a few Norwegian speakers to welcome shoppers from Norway whose spending power was high due to the exchange rate at the time.

And in the interests of transparency just how big was the carbon footprint of this building?
If you don’t know that’s shameful.
If you do, then tell us and they too will be shameful when we are facing a climate crisis.

I’d always assumed that this look out tower at Tynemouth had been built in the backyard by a fellow whose ‘shed’ building hobby had got the better of him. Turns out it was built by the military to direct the firing of the guns at the Priory in the event of an attack on the Tyne.
