Two days into the New Year and paintings, a silk wall hanging and mirrors have been hung on the wall - Hardly an achievement you might think, until I confess that it’s been a year since the builders left.

The campaign medals of Othman, most probably a Zanzibari Muslim. A long serving Seedie in the Royal Navy, he fought in Egypt, three East African campaigns & the Boer War. Sadly, history nowadays largely ignores the service of such men, who don’t fit today’s political narrative.

‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ is such a sweet film, yet, I await sight of the Child Catcher, who remains, in my mind, the scariest film baddie of all time. Even at 53 years old, the thought of him still frightens the life out of me - A quite superb portrayal by Sir Robert Helpmann.

I’ve not lost my touch. A quick complimentary umbrella repair for my old friend & client @PgarrittyPaul. Best of luck at Cheltenham tomorrow - And don’t forget my friends at @InceUmbrellas, if you’re a bookie looking for a new ‘mush’.

My lessons from 2022:

1. Avoid people consumed by their own ambition, and, if need be, walk away from them - Even when it creates more questions than answers.

2. When opportunity knocks, recognise it, and grab it with both hands.

A repeat today on TV that I’m really looking forward to today - The magnificent film ‘Zulu’, albeit with some artistic licence, bizarrely to the detriment of Henry Hook VC. It was Michael Caine’s breakthrough, with a superb cast.

By far, the funniest thing in my household this Christmas has been our Alexa still being completely unable to comprehend my wife’s Ulster accent. It’s been a constant source of amusement - Some of the computer generated responses have been better than the usual repeats on TV.

Just had one of those weird coincidence moments - I bought this pair of medals on eBay to my family name, some years back & put them away. Having come across them again, after some quick research, it turns out that he was my Grandfather’s cousin Fred. I’m lost for words.

A few days ago I tweeted about Terry Hall’s untimely passing & now this. Another talent taken too young & another singer of one of my desert island discs leaves us for a better place. ‘Tearing off tights with my teeth’ - You’ll know what I mean if you were there.
RT @faithless: We are heartbroken to say Maxi Jazz died peacefully in his sleep last night. He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave proper meaning and a message to our mus…
