...You could get you a prison sentence for leafleting, trying to persuade, holding banners (even praying). This is a dangerous precedent for all, beyond the abortion issue. (2/2)
My 1st go at moving a full set of amendments. After a muddled start, I made the argument that however unsavoury - indeed ghoulish - I find those who gather at abortion clinics targeting individual women, I oppose Clause 9 of the Public Order Bill's national catch-all ban... (1/2)
I'll enjoy hearing how @LabourLordsUK respond to this. On this at least, Starmer has my support. Sadly however, it will take a lot more than this to 'restore trust in politics'.
RT @michaelsavage: NEW: Starmer to pledge to abolish House of Lords to ‘restore trust in politics’
Starmer sees radical reform of the second chamber as key to showing how Labour are different.

So Starmer assures us Brexit is safe in Labour's hands. But as Khan makes clear, is it hell. Mind you with Sunak/Hunt flirting with Swizz-like trade arrangements, hardly safe in Tory hands either. National sovereignty/accountability not popular with political leaders. Wonder why?
RT @SadiqKhan: Let’s be honest: Brexit isn’t working.
British exporters are struggling, our living standards are falling and the UK is now the only G7 cou…
So glad this #BattleFest Education not indoctrination conference went ahead today, despite organisers @HandsUpScot having to negotiate now routine hurdles of Cancel Culture. Urgent we defend freedom to debate difficult topics. More on this in our substack https://clairefox.substack.com/p/join-us-today-for-the-event-they
Was pleased to join Michael Portillo on one of his last shows on @TimesRadio to discuss assaults on academic freedom eg mandated demands to decolonise curiculum & disingenuous opposition to Higher Education (Free Speech) Bill in parliament. Listen here: http://clairefox.org.uk/were-socialising-young-people-into-ignorance
Very good news for parents of Wales (and their children).

Oh yes
This thread makes very valid point. Worth a read.
RT @CutMyTaxUK: A thread on why Labour could become the low-tax party.
It would transform British Politics and wipe out the Conservative Party.
Thread: what many who lent their vote to Tories in 2019 feel. Who can blame them? Opportunities for political realignment squandered. Leavers' aspirations taken for granted/betrayed. But still no real appetite or enthusiasm for Labour. Phrase "politically homeless" never so apt
RT @Danjsalt: I'm a social democrat - I lent the Tories my vote in 2019 - never again - they've failed on every metric - the country is a mess - public serv…
Bloody brilliant. Congrats @WeAreFairCop & @HarryTheOwl101 for leading way on this and to those who took up issue in parliament such as @danielmgmoylan. Good riddance to Non Crime Hate Incidents, an illiberal plague that have wasted police time & led to too many being demonised
RT @WeAreFairCop: Policing Minister has tonight confirmed that Chief Constables have been ordered to stop recording NCHIs following Miller v College of Poli…
Many of us keen to defend opera when attacked as elitist or eg when ENO recently lost funding. But sadly, opera itself in danger of destroying its own art form in a desperate (& futile) bid to get down with the (woke) kids. This isn't diversity; it's pandering to EDI conformity.
RT @SpeechUnion: As part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion, leading opera company Glyndebourne will rethink how it stages "offensive" historical …
I'm afraid, fact that many uni lecturers insisted they weren't essential workers in Lockdown, that Higher Education didn't require face-to-face interaction etc, convinced many academia was 2nd order/dispensible. Always clear academia shooting itself in foot.
RT @timeshighered: “Research last year showed that, despite the uniquely high profile of academics during the pandemic, universities still had to convince the general public of…

Why do I keep being shocked? Sometimes I worry that we who bang on about cancel culture or women's rights under assault c/o identity/gender politics, might be accused of hyperbole, of exaggeration. Then reality come along & slaps us in the face: censorship worse than we dreadedp

This afternoon I supported a number of amendments because we must always remember that these laws won't just be applied to #ExtinctionRebellion eco activists, but could apply to everyone...
I dislike the Public Order Bill as it evades the real problem of policing BUT it is very annoying to have many in the Lords discussing #JustStopOil as though they are protest martyrs...
I’m not keen to rely on HR departments or HE management to oversee free speech complaints on campus, when they’re too often trigger happy at disciplining academics/students for what they say…
I tried to plough through legalese of the HE (Freedom of Speech) Bill to query if ‘civil tort’ & dependence on law courts will have a chilling effect. On the other hand, I’m nervous as those opposed try to make the Bill toothless as they underestimate campus cancel culture.
Me in @SpecCoffeeHouse: I'm no fan of #JustStopOil stunts OR anti-abortionists gathering outside clinics. But I'm even less a fan of new #PublicOrderBill. Won't tackle policing crisis that fails to use laws we have. Creates draconion laws targeting ALL. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/we-must-protect-freedom-to-protest-even-for-those-we-despise/
Interesting thread. Something in this
RT @EsmeLKPartridge: One of the reasons young people struggle so much with mental health nowadays is because there is a crisis of authority in society - no one actually tells them how to live well, with any suggestion of a normative or “right” way of doing things being deemed problematic
