Inside The Lords this wk: 2 stories gripping Parl - #WindsorAgreement & Hancock WhatsApps. Rishi sold Brexit Deal well; Tories have bought it. Who wouldn’t welcome easier trading lanes? There's even a veto to deal with ECJ? Then you read LEGAL text! Ouch https://youtu.be/4RaZfDyJxCI

Absolutely. I won't forget the baying mob on Labour & Lib Dem benches in House of Lords daily demanding more/harder lockdown measures, however draconian, all in name of safety. Any dissent was labelled anti-science denial. Oh, and the media - NEVER forget those press conferences!
RT @joenutt_author: @Fox_Claire @ollysmithtravel The Tories will reap the whirlwind - but they were all in it up to their scalps.

Our take on Hancock WhatsApp leak and also exactly why @acadofideas did its own Lockdown Inquiry mid those terrible Covid years. We knew we'd want to put horrors behind us, but that key to say "lest we forget," with remarkable mini films made at time when too few asking questions

Important gp of amendments protecting press freedom from ill-advised, illiberal, chilling clauses in National Security Bill. I'm not allowed to speak but NB media already risk-averse/walks on eggshells re reporting dissent or challenging state. Security can't be excuse to silence

How to spectacularly miss the point. But I've noticed that scapegoating DUP for inability to fully realise Brexit's promise of sovereignty has become the latest fashion from all parties. "Pandering" seems such a cheap word to use in this context.
RT @PetronellaWyatt: Time to stop pandering to the DUP, which has done nothing but blackmail successive British Governments into fighting their wars. Cast them adrift for good and give up NI.

Really quite extraordinary, even if not surprising for some of us. To see it ii in black and white still shocks at just how brazen media manipulation can be.

One thing I genuinely don't understand: why has Gov definitely scrapped Northern Ireland Protocol Bill BEFORE anyone in UK -public, Parl, DUP- has decided IF it accepts #WindsorAgreement? No doubt EU wanted it gone, but surely it COULD still be needed, unless this is a done deal?

Another of those helpful, makes-you-think threads on #WindsorAgreement from @BarristersHorse - always worth a read
RT @BarristersHorse: 1. It seems to me that world events have forced perspective. Whilst the UK has been kicked from pillar to post since 2016, it became clear that our leaving the EU rocked the core of the Brussels institution.

I'm RTing lots of thoughtful threads eg from Brexiteers like @RyanPHoey below, some more/ some less favourable re #WindsorAgreement. Everyone should read it themselves but I find mulling it over collectively helpful cf Town Hall mtgs/public conversations in @acadofideas tradition

Useful thread on #WindsorAgreement. Defintely verges towards positives (but there ARE positives) and underplays negatives (there ARE negatives). But it is a good summation of contents. As always, political issues such as proper sovereighty need to be given more weight in all this

More smiling ERGers. When we actually get to see this damn deal, we'll know who exactly stands where. Such a shame that the public are sidelined, not able to make up their own minds in order to tell Rishi et al. what they think of it - good or bad - before anything signed off.

!!! If ever anyone's high-handed, self-regarding, tone-deaf disdain for democracy & self-rule illustrated what triggered Brexit, this thread is a perfect example.
RT @Otto_English: Why did the UK fall for Brexit? Hubris, damned lies, weapons grade exceptionalism and the very dangerous conceit that we could "shake things up" and still land on our feet all played a part. Nations do not have a God-given right to thrive. And we are learning that the hard way.

None of us know what's in Rishi's Deal. Indeed, secrecy a problem that fuels suspicion. Don't know if DUP/ERG will accept it. What I do know: this whole episode, incl paying court to #VonDerLeyen, crowing by likes of Guy below, induces familiar, gut-wrenching feelings of sell-out
RT @GuyVerhofstadt: PM Sunak says "There’s unfinished business on Brexit".
Yes..reversing it!
This deal might be welcome, but it addresses the symptoms, not the Brexit malaise.
