My summation. After a long, largely civil debate, I made a last call for balance RE the troubling issue of a nationwide mandate for buffer zones around abortion clinics...

I tried to plough through legalese of the HE (Freedom of Speech) Bill to query if ‘civil tort’ & dependence on law courts will have a chilling effect. On the other hand, I’m nervous as those opposed try to make the Bill toothless as they underestimate campus cancel culture.

Can funding compromise academic research? People assume that the answer is yes - for example when corporates get involved. But what about when it's charities/NGOs or even politicians looking for evidence? Isn't that the same?...

Debating new Public Order Bill this afternoon. I argued that we shouldn't let government exploit the popular revulsion of the tactics and aims of Just-Stop-Oil types to bring in draconian assaults on right to #freespeech and protest for all.
The next time I spoke I raised the pernicious problem of universities signing up to third-party organisations that lay down values which damage academic freedom and free speech (eg Stonewall or Advance HE's Race Equality Charter with its CRT version of race)... (1/2)
