Ο Οκτώβριος έχει θεσμοθετηθεί ως ο μήνας πρόληψης και ενημέρωσης κατά του καρκίνου του μαστού, του πιο συχνού τύπου καρκίνου στον γυναικείο πληθυσμό.
Είναι μια πλήρως ιάσιμη ασθένεια εφόσον εντοπιστεί έγκαιρα και κάθε γυναίκα πρέπει να στηρίζεται και να διευκολύνεται ώστε να μπορεί να κάνει τον προληπτικό της έλεγχο. Η πολιτική στην υγεία για τα θέματα του καρκίνου του μαστού πρέπει να συνδεθεί οριζόντια με όλες τις πολιτικές για την εργασία, την οικονομία και το κοινωνικό κράτος, γιατί όταν μια γυναίκα νοσεί υποφέρει μαζί της και όλη η οικογένεια.
