RT by @ECDC_EU: 🙏 to > 277 colleagues from countries across the @WHO_Europe Region for being at joint briefing with @ECDC_EU & @Folkhalsomynd 🇸🇪 on Mpox situation: step up measures we know that work, with communities at the centre, & working together on how new strain ‚behaves‘ in Europe.

[2024-08-16 15:09 UTC]

RT by @ECDC_EU: My thanks to our partners at @ECDC_EU - under the leadership of Director Dr Pamela @rendiwagner - and Sweden's @Folkhalsomynd for today's deliberations on the scenario in the @WHO_Europe Region, within the wider context of the mpox challenge globally.

The European Region was the initial epicentre of the 2022 mpox clade II outbreak - focused primarily in men who have sex with men.

Today's scenario involving the ongoing mpox clade I outbreak in several African countries - with one confirmed clade Ib case reported in Sweden linked to travel to East-Central Africa - is a reminder that a public health threat in one part of the world can impact regions well beyond.

That our world is interconnected - a lesson learnt during in no uncertain terms.

That collaboration across countries and regions, across agencies and institutions, is critical in tackling the challenges we have in common.

That surveillance must be robust, diagnostics must be top-notch, and access to prevention and treatment unfettered.

That there's no room whatsoever for stigma and discrimination targeting infected or impacted individuals and communities. Rather, we must foster an environment imbued with equity and dignity for all.

R to @ECDC_EU: The overall risk for the EU/EEA general population is currently assessed as low.

However, the likelihood of infection for people from the EU/EEA travelling to affected areas who have close contact with affected communities is high.

R to @ECDC_EU: Due to frequent and close travel links between the EU/EEA and Africa, recommends that EU/EEA Member States issue travel advice for people visiting or returning from areas affected by the outbreak.

We have just published a risk assessment on the current

outbreak.
ECDC recommends enhancing preparedness as more imported cases of clade I mpox are highly likely, but the likelihood of sustained transmission in Europe is very low.

RT by @ECDC_EU: Sweden – a @WHO_Europe Member State – has confirmed the first clade I case outside of the African Region.

This, a day after @WHO declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern amid the rapidly evolving clade I scenario in the Democratic Republic of Congo and several other African countries.

Swedish health authorities say the infected person had travelled to an area of Africa experiencing an mpox outbreak.

As we noted earlier, it was only a matter of time before mpox clade I – which appears to be more severe than clade II - was detected in other @WHO Regions, given our interconnected world.

The infected person is being treated for their symptoms.
Standard public health measures including isolation of the patient and contact tracing are being undertaken.

Swedish health authorities stress that while the threat to the wider public remains low, vigilance is essential.

I commend 🇸🇪 @socialdep under Minister @jakobforssmed for today’s announcement.

It demonstrates transparency and is proof of a robust mpox surveillance system – an example for all countries to follow.

Once again, WHO/Europe urges all 53 of our Member States across Europe and Central Asia to enhance surveillance to detect mpox, issue sound public health advice, and strengthen access to vaccines and antivirals.

Not least, I also urge governments, health authorities and the public at large not to stigmatise or discriminate against any individuals or communities impacted by mpox.

This is a message we drove home time and again during the 2022 mpox clade II outbreak in the WHO/Europe Region when men who have sex with men were largely affected.

That initial outbreak was swiftly curbed through engaging and partnering with communities – to empower people to take charge of their own health, take appropriate protective measures and create a supportive environment conducive to optimal health outcomes.

As the current mpox clade II …

RT by @ECDC_EU: Solidarity, partnership, response.

has once again been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

At this time, the WHO African Region remains the most affected, with worrying developments in the evolution and spread of the disease.

But we live in an interconnected world where pathogens can be swiftly transmitted far and wide.

We at @WHO_Europe are committed to supporting our 53 Member States, as well as our colleagues at @WHOAFRO and the @AfricaCDC under the leadership of Dr @JeanKaseya2 - to help control and prevent local, national & global transmission.

R to @ECDC_EU: The risk of human exposure to OROV in the EU/EEA is considered VERY LOW, despite the likely importation of further disease cases, as the competent vectors are absent from continental Europe.

R to @ECDC_EU: The risk of infection for citizens travelling to or residing in epidemic areas in South & Central America & the Caribbean is moderate.

The risk increases for those visiting highly affected areas, particularly in northern Brazil or the Amazon region.
