I don't think many MPs could have been elected to Parliament intending to impose "austerity" on people, as if that were an explicit policy intention.

The A word was widely used in the 2010 - 2015 Parliament to complain about what over that period was a higher average percentage of GNP being spent on public services, compared to the average percentage of GNP spent on public services during the previous 1997 - 2010 Labour administration.
