Unfortunately using wedge issues to cause division and stoking culture wars - is how some politcians seek to define their political identity.
That's why some politicians don't appear to have any genuine ethical mandate - they merely 'flip flop' back and forth depending on what narratives they believe will keep their core voters voting for them.
