Depressing to see Starmer boxing himself in on , claiming problems can all be “fixed” from outside the EU. Ironically he calls for honesty - yet it’s precisely honesty that’s absent from claims that we can “make Brexit work” - we can’t & it won’t independent.co.uk/news/uk/brex

@CarolineLucas Going back in is not realistic. We need 27 countries to approve our entry and would have to make concessions to individual countries. It’s not happening.

@thisleenoble @CarolineLucas We don’t need to rejoin the EU, we do need to join the SM&CU.

@johnelalamo @CarolineLucas Original tweet says “EU”. I know SM&CU would be desirable. Still external challenges in aiming for that and we need to acknowledge it’s no longer our decision to make alone. It would still be “making brexit work” since we can’t hit Ctrl-Z on brexit.

@thisleenoble @CarolineLucas Imho SM&CU is essential, given most advanced European economies are either in EU or SM&CU. The Gravity Model of International Trade is still pretty important.

@CarolineLucas I have no idea who Starmer is trying to appeal to. I doubt this rant will win him many votes - particularly in Scotland.

@CarolineLucas He hasn't done any such thing of course. We will get it in time as events unfold. He is, as usual, several steps ahead and is insulating himself from being forced to act on the totally unrealistic expectations of so many who apparently can't think that far ahead. He needs to be in office to do anything at all. He deserves that chance.

@CarolineLucas I think the only way to make Brexit work is a lot of small sensible steps: Adopt EU phytosanitary regulations to remove requirements for export certificates. Harmonise customs arrangements - may as well join EFTA. Merge ETA and ETIAS schemes and other border controls. Participate in Europe-wide refugee agency. Oh we're pretty much back where we were and should just rejoin.
