RT by @Brendandonn: When many Conservative MPs talk about “unity” what they mean is unity between the various right wing factions of the Party. This is understandable. The past decades have shown that the One Nation wing of the Party is no longer capable of effective action to stand up for itself.

RT by @Brendandonn: There will come a time in the not too distant future when its enthusiasm for Brexit will prevent a party from being a “credible governing party.”

Commentators sometimes underestimate the damage done to the British political ecosystem by the disappearance of One Nation Conservatism as an effective political force. The vacuum left in the Conservative Party has been predictably filled by eccentric and dangerous sectarians.

RT by @Brendandonn: I am surprised at this apparent view from European Movement that the reversal of Brexit is a task only for a “future generation” of leaders. This smacks altogether too much of resignation. It also gives a free pass to Starmer and chums on their current European spinelessness.

We need to be very sceptical of the idea, cultivated by the advocates of Brexit, that there is no prospect of reversing Brexit in any foreseeable future. The Brexiters were wrong about everything else. We can show that they are wrong about this as well.

No argument in the Brexit debate is more implausible than the claim that Leave voters voted to accept the costs of Brexit when they rejected the Remain campaign that warned about these costs. The denial of Brexit’s costs was well captured in the Leave slogan “Project Fear. ”

The alternative to membership of the EU was deliberately left vague by Leave campaigners. The only way to assemble a majority for Brexit was to allow every Leave voter to form their own private fantasy version of Brexit and the consequences that would follow from it.

RT by @Brendandonn: The problem with the anarchic referendum of 2016 was that everyone on the Leave side had a different interpretation of what they were voting for. After the referendum they then insisted that their own interpretation was the “will of the people.” Political chaos was inevitable.

In today’s Conservative Parliamentary Party almost everyone is either plotting, or being plotted against, or both plotter and plottee at the same time. If they are none of these things they are on television calling for party unity, until they become part of the next plot.
