David Frost and crew used to bleat about the supposedly undemocratic European Union. Now from his lofty perch in the unelected House of Lords he lectures the House of Commons for getting ideas above its station. Eat your heart out Jonathan Swift.

RT by @Brendandonn: The apparently welcome participation of Farage at this supposedly Conservative event reminds us of the existential uncertainty of today’s Conservative Party about what it is and what it stands for. What, if anything, does the Conservative Party want to conserve?

Historians will muse about the transformation of the Conservative Party from a political formation that perhaps wanted to conserve too much into one that certainly wanted to conserve nothing at all. Who would have foreseen Conservatism as a backer of permanent revolution?

RT by @Brendandonn: It’s not really an idea. It’s just a coping mechanism. If you know you are condemned to humiliating, perhaps existence-threatening defeat at the next election, it brings some solace to believe that straws exist that can be grasped at.

RT by @Brendandonn: It’s amusing to hear a member of the House of Lords complaining that the House of Commons is too big for its boots. I remember learning at school that Conservative peers used to hold that view before WW1. My teachers assured me that nothing like that could ever happen again.

RT by @Brendandonn: If I had a Sunday newspaper to edit I’d also assume that readers would prefer the halfway dramatic twists and turns of Conservative infighting to the latest narcosis-inducing iteration of this government’s incompetence and cronyism. Editors want to sell their newspapers.

RT by @Brendandonn: The fact that many Eurosceptics in the UK want the EU to fail is well known to our European neighbours. It is one of the reasons why the EU will want particular reassurance about the UK’s good faith when we seek to rejoin. They will not let us opt out of this, that and the other.

RT by @Brendandonn: I am not sure Sweden and the UK are in the same position. Sweden never flounced out of the EU hoping that its departure would destroy the Union. The EU will want guarantees of good behaviour from the UK if it rejoins. A promised referendum in the future might not be sufficient.

RT by @Brendandonn: Membership of the Euro and Schengen are huge privileges. It seems be only Brits that see them as burdens instead.

RT by @Brendandonn: We shouldn’t forget the Goebbelsesque role of the Eurosceptic media in presenting the EU as corrupt, hostile, incompetent and dictatorial. Europhiles had not done enough by 2016 to combat the misrepresentations. It was all too easy for them simply to say,”I want a reformed EU.”

RT by @Brendandonn: If you are going to be dismissive of your antagonist it helps your credibility to check your spelling. “Sticks and stones” are not the same thing as “schticks and stones,” even if both can harm your reputation,

RT by @Brendandonn: Many people who are part of an unrepresentative minority are convinced that they are part of a silent majority. It’s only that (and their sense of humour) that keeps them going.

RT by @Brendandonn: Brexit’s leading advocates tend to think that if the rest of the world is not wholly conforming to their wishes then the rest of the world is betraying them. This reflects their strange view of sovereignty. We are entitled to get what we want. Or we’ll scream till we are sick.

RT by @Brendandonn: Brexiters don’t realise how lucky they are. Even a little bit of gentle sabotage from Remainers might well have put an end to Brexit by now. Instead the Brexiters have had a free run.

RT by @Brendandonn: The belief that Remainers have sabotaged Brexit typifies the Alice in Wonderland thinking at the heart of Brexit. In fact, too many Remainers have been excessively passive in their muted opposition to Brexit since 2016. Brexit has been given much too much of a free run.

RT by @Brendandonn: The European Movement is the last organisation in the world that should acquiesce in this feebleness. If the Labour Party and the Standard want to wait ten years to rejoin, then that is their choice. But the European Movement should be bolder. Otherwise it has no reason to exist.

RT by @Brendandonn: Which is essentially why the Conservative Party finds itself in today’s fine mess. The moderates for a long time persuaded themselves that it was not yet the right time to confront the extremists. And in 2024 it has become too late to do so.

When in the not too distant future 80% of the electorate want to rejoin the EU there will probably still be some commentators urging caution about Europe. “ The time is not yet ripe,” they will say. Sir Humphrey would approve.
