Re @13sarahmurphy Moderate and rational Conservative MPs have had dozens of opportunities in the past twenty years to stem their Party’s stampede towards extremism. There is no reason to think it will be any different this time round. Hand-wringing will be the limit of their activity.

Re @SoupTomatoSoup @Mij_Europe @MESandbu I remember once being asked by a radio interviewer how the European Parliament could be democratic if most MEPs were not British. The question was put in a tone of genuine puzzlement.

Re @DonMai79 @pswidlicki I am certainly not saying that the UK’s application to rejoin the EU will be without problems. What I do say is that the sooner the UK starts the process of rejoining the sooner the process is likely to be completed.

Re @eadingas @pswidlicki The question is how long it is before the British political parties work out that there are votes to be had by advocating pro-European policies. It seems counter-intuitive to assume the present stasis can last for ever or even much longer.

Re @pswidlicki I don’t know when we will rejoin the EU. I am however sure that prédictions by well-regarded commentators that we will not be rejoining anytime soon contribute to pushing back the date when rejoining happens.

Re @tig_james The right wing of the Conservative Party are looking beyond 2024. They think Labour’s failures after 2024 will allow the Conservatives to be re-elected in 2028. The Conservative right want to start now on radicalising the Party in readiness for that return in five years time.

Re @remain_central If he were not PM Sunak would be a fully paid up member of his Party’s lunatic right wing. It is only his Premiership which exposes him to rational advice and therefore somewhat restrains his natural preferences.

Re @edwinhayward By the time we get to a referendum most people will probably have lost interest in who voted which way in 2016. Many voters will by then only dimly remember how they themselves voted, if indeed they were able to vote in the first place.

Re @danielmgmoylan @DLidington @patricklohlein Another one of the problems is that Lord Moylan and those who think as he does regard as controversial a statement by the British Prime Minister that the UK will carry out its obligations under an international treaty which it freely signed.

Re @APHClarkson These elites find much more congenial the concept of subordination to the US than that if equality with European partners. The former echoes the great days of WW2. The latter reflects contemporary reality.

Re @NicholasTyrone It makes no sense to be the only sane person in a lunatic asylum.

Re @lewis_baston This has been the case for a long time, and “moderate” Conservatives have done little to stop it from happening. Few of them are willing even now to acknowledge the feebleness of their resistance. Instead, they congratulate themselves on their ineffectual hand-wringing.

Re @acgrayling There are too many commentators resigned to the idea that it will take many years to reverse Brexit. Their resignation risks becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. The sooner we start the process of rejoining the EU, the sooner that process will be successfully concluded.

Re @AndyGJBurge @ClaireCopperman @CCHQPress If the government cannot make life better for its own citizens it will at least do its best to make life worse for other people.

Re @goodclimate Ben seems to have voted for restrictive rules that would apply to other people, not to him. Much of the Leave campaign was based on the fantasy/lie that this combination was a realistic one.

I talk about whether the leaders of the Leave campaign should be prosecuted; when we will rejoin the EU; and the power of the right-wing media—-three topics with much to say about them.
