Yes!! After 1,5 years of negotiations, today parliament adopted our report on the 6th Anti-Money Laundering Directive. As LIBE's rapporteur, I am very happy with this strong parliament position which will deal a hard blow to money launderers.

The inconvenient truth: we are losing the fight against anti-money laundering.
According to @UNDC up to 2 trillion US dollars is laundered globally every single year: https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/money-laundering/overview.html

So, what did we propose to solve this?
1) Disclosure of the beneficial owner (BO) of high-value tangible goods, like real-estate, expensive cars, boats and planes and all tangible movable goods in ‘free zones’. And central interfaces granting authorities swift access to it.

2) We had to ensure national authorities managing BO registers have adequate powers to verify the data in their register. And if needed can do on-site checks or issue sanctions.

3) And we restored access to BO registers for journalists and NGOs. The ECJ ruled “public access” is not proportionate. So, we defined groups with “legitimate interest” and created a simple registration procedure (declaration of honour granting 2,5 years access throughout the EU)

This is just a short non-exhaustive summary of all proposals co-rapporteur @ludeknie, our shadow rapporteurs and I agreed to.
In April the report will go through plenary, ahead of our first trilogue on the 11th of May.
We are ready the fight against money laundering!

After Putin’s invasion in Ukraine, the EU put Russian oligarchs on its sanctions list. However, many EU countries didn’t know what goods and real-estate they actually had to freeze. Once they knew, the goods were already transferred outside EU: https://www.forbes.com/sites/katharinabuchholz/2022/03/24/the-frozen-russian-superyachts-and-those-that-got-away-infographic/
