When leaders like Starmer blather on about “tough choices”, why is it *always* code for hitting some of the poorest hardest? Where’s the “tough choice” of a wealth tax on the super-rich? Why do shivering pensioners have to pay the price for “fixing the foundations”?

As a pensioner who used to get the winter fuel allowance and now won't, I think it was crazy to spend this taxpayer money on people like me who don't need it. Whether the threshold at which people stop getting it is right I can't say, but if the cost of means testing it overwhelms the savings from doing it there's something fundamentally wrong with how the system is administrated.
