I think the worst thing about it is that it includes government spending.

That may make sense for some aspects of government spending but it must distort indications of economic activity.

Russia's GDP has shot up since the war in Ukraine started.
I can only assume that is due to military spending. As a result Putin is claiming Russia's economy is doing better than Germany.
