My view is that there is a huge gap between the enormous effort and resources necessary to organize #ECIs and their weak legal effects - even if the required threshold of 1 million signatures is reached. 1/2

#CoE and #EU have a closely intertwined agenda in protecting the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights.

Communist dictatorships have claimed hundreds of millions of lives worldwide. In Eastern Europe, people were executed, persecuted, worked to death in labour camps and deprived of their freedoms.

🎈25 years since we have standards for the protection of national minorities and minority languages at #CoE level.

👉The #FCNM & #ECRML give us the tools to improve the situation of minorities. We need to further develop them in Europe to ensure effective access to our rights.

Lessons learned:
👉Partners are easy to lose but hard to win back;
👉We were right to see the electoral calculations of the ÖVP behind the #Schengen decision. It did not work for them. (3/3)

The today’s outcome of the elections in Lower Austria show that the whole 🇦🇹#Schengen circus in December was in vain.

The conservative ÖVP has lost 10% from the previous elections and it is their worst result since 1945. On image and reputation, they have lost even more. (1/3)
