I write today with @GuyVerhofstadt against the dangerous free-for-all in industrial policy in Europe.

Instead, deepen the single market, reform competition policy, make the NectGen fiscal instruments permanent and invest in world class universities.

Three years ago we sang, in goodbye, Auld Lang Syne.
It was clear then that Brexit was a major mistake.
Today, even Brexiteers cannot find the upside.

Great thread (and great piece)

RT @charlesjkenny: It isn’t just the US tourism industry. The CEOs of every US firm involved in trade and investment ought to be out in front of the US State Department with megaphones and placards demanding action.

Are EU countries' debts sustainable?

Collard, Habib, Panizza and Rochet use a framework where default is sometimes inevitable and find
- With high recovery (80%): only ITA and GR not sustainable
- With low (30%): also IRL, SPA, POR not sustainable cepr.org/voxeu/columns/assessi

@Bellmanequation @UChi_Economics The core was insane. Took it in 93. The time constraints plus the 50% pass rate made it the hardest thing I have ever done.

For @paulkrugman . Maybe looking at evidence beyond the USA is relevant?
RT @BaldwinRE: 101 case study
👉 Despite retail price caps .food & power prices in Hungary rose 50% in December y/y
👉 price caps caused shortages of fuel & staples such as sugar as retailers declined to sell below cost, &price rises for non-capped products that consumers bought to compensate

Sorry this is complete BS. The ASML boss is talking his book - if making this extreme ultra violet photolithographic equipment (3nm!!) was so easy, his own company would not have a complete monopoly in the market.

Resumiendo:
1) La Productividad no crece
2) El número de horas cae
3) El empleo privado se estanca
4) El gasto en pensiones se dispara

O revertimos estas tendencias o nuestra economía no se sostiene.
