A moving story of one of the many victims of the senseless war of agression of Russia in Ukraine: a brave US medic who volunteed to set up a field hospital and provide medical care in a destroyed Bakhmut.

@MushtaqBilalPhD @MTJBetts I don't know which "folks in academia" you talk to, but the ones I know love the process you describe-increases their productivity by eliminating tedious work and the visibility of their research. What is not to like?

Third "object" short down in one week. Now in Canada.
Is the Chinese government doing this on purpose? With what purpose?
RT @JustinTrudeau: I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace. @NORADCommand shot down the object over the Yukon. Canadian and U.S. aircraft were scrambled, and a U.S. F-22 successfully fired at the object.

The metaphor in this great Ted Chiang @NewYorker article about the technology behind LLMs/ChatGPT (i.e., that is a form a of a "language compression" algorithm) clarifies hugely the limits on what it can and it cannot do. A must read. newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-t

The level of hypocrisy and cynicism demonstrated by this study leaves me speechless.

Does this align with your observations, @Mylovanov, Yuliia Svyrydenko, @SergiiMarchenk3, @sguriev, @McFaul?

A master class in grown-up politics, emphasizing choices mean trade-offs: costs and benefits of the European Union membership, by John Major.
RT @implausibleblog: "Are people in my country better off and safer if we were in the European Union than if we were outside? And I reached the conclusion that we were better off inside."

@COdendahl Thing with her is that --it is clear already in 1985-- she really understands the economics and gives it with all the nuance. I loved Beautiful Mind and also Grand Pursuit. It would be great for "someone" to interview her ;-)

I loved the reticence of the economists to use the "new trade theory" to influence policy, given how likely it would be to be misused. They were fully aware of the risk of capture, and did not want to at the game.

A gem indeed!
A beautiful ( from 1985!) story on new trade theory, the theorists who developed it and the case for and against semiconductor industrial policy by the undisputed master of writing about economists, Sylvia Nassea.
RT @COdendahl: An old gem from 1985, featuring this "Young Turk", on the new case for and ... semiconductors. blogs.ubc.ca/barbaraspencer/fi

US attitudes to privacy are incomprehensible. To rent an appartment, I am forced to send confidential information to a third party. Its privacy statement includes the classic:"MRI reserves the right to change this Privacy Policy at any time without notice"

C'mon @LibDems @EdwardJDavey! Time to lead Britain back to the EU! It is good policy (obvious) and good politics (neither Conservatives nor Labour can do it without fracturing!).
RT @gideonrachman: My latest argues that it is far too fatalistic to say that Brexit is irreversible: 58% of Brits already say they want to rejoin the EU. Those figures will rise as economic damage mounts & the young enter the electorate. Politicians will have to catch up https://www.ft.c…

After bungling initial Covid spread, Zero Covid, Tech crackdown, Hong Kong, real estate bubble, and now THE BALLOON... how reassuring is it to realize the Chinese government is pretty incompetent?

Not reassuring at all. Mistakes, misperceptions and plain stupidity cause wars.
