Today we will have a debate the current situation in #Israel. Since weeks people in #TelAviv #Jerusalem and other cities demonstrate against the legal reform of the new #Netanyahu government

What does the government want to change?
▶️seeks full power over the appointment of the nine-member committee that selects the judges of the Supreme Court
▶️wants to give the #Knesset the ability to override court decisions by a simple majority

Why is it problematic?
Experts agree that a reform of the judiciary system in #Israel is necessary, however, not in the shape, form, and process now proposed by the government.

▶️The Ultra-Orthodox resent the Supreme Court for putting limits as to their priorities : complete exemption from military service for religious men studying the Torah, more power of religious leaders, gender separation in public places

▶️Right wing nationalist forces: resent the Supreme Court for striking down laws that legalise settlements in the West Bank (NB: the current government in their coalition agreement outlined its claim over the whole West Bank)
