7 again is pretty obvious. Choose your allies. Simple as that.
Part 6 is the most important part in my view. Beside other we call on @TotalEnergies to halt the project until all disputes are solved. This is especially important because we don’t want any European company to be engaged in any kind of human rights violations.
Part 5 actually is addressed to ourselves since we are currently in the process of writing a corporate social due diligence directive
And we want civil society organisations to be able to access the oil zone of course
In part 3 we want governments to compensate in a correct way and if necessary to update local law so future land acquisition processes won‘t create the same problems any more
In part 2 we call 🇺🇬 and🇹🇿 to ensure that police and security forces respect human rights which they obviously did not do before. Furthermore we urge Ugandan gov. to reauthorise the 54 NGOs that have been closed or suspended for no reason.
Sooooo and with the NUMBERS, there comes the important part! This is where the 🇪🇺 Parliament expresses its opinion and calls other parties to get active in a certain way. First part focuses on the victims and asks the authorities to ensure their freedom
Point H reminds of all the victims of late, little or no compensation during the land acquisition process.
G recalls that the EU delegation was denied access to the area. Suspicious, no?
F reminds of @TotalEnergies not complying with french law
Part E draws attention to some of the people who suffered severe human rights violations like death threats and arbitrary imprisonment.
Part D focuses on the severe climate impact of the additional 34 million tonnes of carbon that would be emitted to the atmosphere and the @IEA warning of new oil projects. Total claims to build climate-friendly pipeline which is a bad joke in itself.
Part C recalls the strong opposition through civil society
Part B recalls the danger for water sources through EACOP. Especially the tsunami risk in Tanga and the water crossing technique „open trench“
Now lets look into the text. The „having regard“ part shows the documents or treaties of relevance for the resolution.
The „whereas“ part (marked by letters A-H) Shows the information and facts that were taken into account.
It starts with with general recognition
I co-initiated resolution on 🇺🇬/🇹🇿 which is widely discussed at the moment. Big support from local people but also accusations of racism and imperialism from the speaker of @Parliament_Ug came up.
