Explore our infographic on new psychoactive substances (NPS) notified for the first time to the EU Early Warning System. Over 880 NPS are currently monitored by the EMCDDA and 52 were reported for the first time in 2021.

The latest analysis suggests the availability of cocaine in Europe remains high, bringing with it a range of health threats. A record 213 tonnes of cocaine were seized in the EU in 2020, while 23 laboratories were dismantled.

Today, the EU Early Warning System on new psychoactive substances celebrates its 25th anniversary. On 16 June 1997, the EU adopted its first legislation on NPS, allowing it to react rapidly to threats caused by these new drugs.
