This week I also voted on Parliament’s position on a new EU Asylum System.
It’s a mixed bag of laws, 1 of which I had the honor to negotiate: the Crisis Regulation.
Whenever a lot of asylum seekers come (Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine…), it allows the EU to trigger measures. /1

Even though I actively influenced it over 3 years, I decided to abstain on the law.
While I am determined to help the people in need & the countries at our borders, the tools we chose do matter.
Here is what the Commission could trigger according to the law: /2

I managed to strengthen relocation during negotiations, and prima facie was my idea.
But the derogations that prolong detention, I strongly oppose!
That’s why I asked my faction to abstain.
I will still fight for the good parts in trilogues with the ministers! 🙏🏼

A big thank you also here to the mastermind @KSolieva! And to @LBDonner for juggling a thousand asylum files with amazing precision; and our very knowledgeable and fun French & Scottish intern @ConstanceTrep 🙏🏼
