We do actually need net inward migration, because we're still having to recruit from overseas for skilled jobs like doctors, dentists, nurses and other professionals. If you have a sick population, because the government decided to let the bodies pile high, that's what happens.

Interesting philosophically. Is it the case that a lot of people are unclear about the fact that you can hold an opinion that is untrue, unjust and unkind, and that is a fact about you, and about the opinion, and hence stating that it is so is a statement of fact? And truth apt.

R to @catherinerowett: Also, if your doctors and scientists are leaving for other countries where pay is better or research collaboration is better, you will struggle to get enough arriving to fill the vacancies. People need to understand the implications of pay settlements below inflation, & Brexit.

R to @catherinerowett: Ah, I suppose the answer is they've increased the tax on working people because the tiny increases in pay that people have had, with no change to the tax thresholds, means that we're all paying more tax from the same amount of work.

"worth up to £900 p.a."
Unless you are on housing benefit, in which case you will lose that?
Oh, and you'll pay tax on it? So what you actually get won't in fact meet the rise in costs, especially as food inflation is at 30%?
So no, you still won't feel any better off. Sorry.

Average wages have increased 3% under the Tories (Labour shadow chancellor). Always we should beware of "average wages". The problem is real people's salaries, especially in the public sector. It's not good enough to count the increases in private sector and look at averages.

Lucky for the Chancellor that someone increased National Insurance on workers to unprecedented levels last yr. So he could cut it this year and say he's supporting workers with tax cuts, to pretend the Tories really want to make work pay.

It would be better to have the debt lower because GDP rose, rather than not borrowing. Borrowing is not a deferred tax. It's a way to invest in future generations.

Pity they didn't do a long term workforce plan for the NHS before Brexit eh? How about paying the workforce so they actually stay after you've trained them?

You know what: you need to grow the public spending and then that leads to growth in revenue and GDP.
Tories don't understand. If you cut the public spending and investment, revenues fall and the balance of in-and-out get worse. They think the wrong way round.

R to @catherinerowett: If you starve the people and leave them sick and on waiting lists, you don't get higher productivity.
If you only support private enterprise productivity will fall in the public sector. And that ends up with a terrible decline in everything a civilised country needs.

If you want to increase apprentices, you should also pay apprentices properly, otherwise they will leave the apprenticeship and take a job that pays them the real wage.

Oh no, not that horrid idea of bribing people to accept grid infrastructure across the countryside? 🤮
The Tories don't understand that people believe in doing proper infrastructure and won't be bought off.
PS if you want people to have cheaper electricity give them solar panels.
