@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay It would be so useful if civic bike hire schemes included some cargo bikes for putting kiddies in (and luggage) so you could go by train and then pop the toddler in an e-bike and go somewhere from the station.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay Ah that's interesting. I also have a push scooter which I take on the train sometimes (but then I have to take the bus to the station here, so I more often go by bike to the station and then at the other end use a bike hire or scooter hire app if there is one).

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay Yes I wonder whether there would be more local hire places if hiring was the normal way to use a car. My local car hire closed and for a while I had to get to the airport (seriously irritating). I think there is a more local one now though I haven't used it yet.

@annawright08 @Harry_is_human It's supposed to be open to cycles, so we need to insist on that. I went through on a bike and asked the warden whether it was OK, and she didn't seem to know. The barrier should not be obstructing bikes. The road is not closed. It's closed to motor vehicles.

RT @RhonddaBryant: I get the overwhelming feeling that nothing really works in Tory Britain. Passports, asylum, DVLA, NHS backlog, police corruption, racist fire service, workforce shortages, SME failures, housing shortage, road closures, strikes, ministerial whirligig and parliamentary scandals.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay In my experience renting or car clubs save enormously over owning a car. I wonder how you work it out as costlier? I guess taxis are expensive if you're out in the country. Again, living near the things you most frequent is cheapest & easiest, even if houses look more pricey.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay I've kept bikes at many stations in the past. Most stations have secure bike parking with CCTV. If not, you just make sure it's a basic old fashioned nothing special bike and has no attractive accessories. They're the best anyway. I've had more nicked from Uni than the station.

Don't buy an e-scooter for your boy.
1. They are illegal and he might get points on the driving license he doesn't yet have.
And
2. 276 casualties among boys between 10 and 19 in the year to June 2022.

@RumbleBee2 @LuckyHeronSay So if you couldn't access a car what would you do? Maybe (a) move into Portsmouth so everything is easy to access? Or (b) create, organise, and participate in more fun things locally so there's plenty to do there? Or (c) keep a few bikes at Portsmouth station? Or something else?

@LuckyHeronSay And what is the car club provision like in your home town? Would that be better than owning a car? If not what is wrong with it?

🐦🔗: nitter.eu/catherinerowett/stat

@LuckyHeronSay Additional questions: what would it take for you to give up your car even though you have children (i.e. what do you and they need)? What would it take for you to find it possible or preferable to move to somewhere with the right transport connections for a car free life?

RT @13sarahmurphy: Another day. Another stupid proposal from this raging binfire that calls itself our government. Today it’s “global Britain’ banning foreign students from our financially struggling flagship universities. What a headline. What a paranoid and prejudiced place they’d have us be.

RT @PGDynes: For context - on where the over-consumption of energy issue resides - The amount of electricity the US uses for air conditioning is the equivalent of the total electricity consumption for the entire continent of Africa.

RT @ucu: Universities are sitting on £40,000,000,000 in reserves. Just 3% of that would settle our pay claim.

Don’t listen to anyone who tells you the sector can’t afford to pay staff properly. It’s a lie.
