They saw that EU rules were regulating and curbing free markets and they thought that was hurting them (but it was protecting us). And they saw that workers & farmers were protected, and they thought exploiting people would be more lucrative.

That concealed the lack of strategy and the slavish dependence on completely insecure last minute supplies of food, gas, oil, labour and water treatment chemicals. And no one bothered to think that this made the country a sitting 🦆

No government of this country, for decades, has had a proper strategy (or any strategy) for food or energy security. They relied on the EU to provide certain kinds of strategic intervention, regulations and incentives to mitigate the worst of free market deregulation.

PS, you'd be amazed at the idiotic suggested easy solutions people are suggesting. There's only one solution and that is to free Ukraine, and ensure that Russia doesn't gain anything from the aggression and is not encouraged to repeat the process over and over.
