The problem is we're talking about not being able to switch on that fire at all. About two parents working and still short of money. About families unable to afford hot water for a hot water bottle. About standing charges that eat all your money so you can't boil a kettle.

You remember that 2 bar electric fire do you? So do I. I still have it and use it. Yes, we used to be able to afford to switch on an electric fire, and dad's salary was enough, and mum could stay at home and cook us a hot dinner, a long slow stew, say. Remember? Good times?

@DAOBarry Public sector pay and benefits rising by less than half of the cost of living rise (and most had seen real terms decline over decades). It's genuinely apocalyptic. People will be out collecting firewood next winter. They may even be living in the woods.

@DAOBarry Yes. At the moment we still have an excess of job vacancies (but of course many require specific skills). But as disposable income shrinks to zero across a vast proportion of the population (everyone on low to middle incomes) arts leisure and hospitality sectors will collapse.
